Rusli was born in Medan, North Sumatra, 1916 From 1932 to 1938 Rusli lived in India where he studied painting, philosophy and literature at Santiniketan University.
Rusli has spent most of his life in Yogyakarta. He was a teacher at Taman Siswa (1945 - 1949) and headed the art section of the Military School of the Department of Defence and Security during the Revolution era.
Rusli was a lecturer at Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI), Yogyakarta from 1951 - 1956.
His works were exhibited at the Second Biennale Exhibition in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1953 and on the following year he had his solo exhibitions in
The Hague (1954), Amsterdam and at the Palazzo Brancaccio, Rome (1955).
Rusli has had numerous solo and group exhibition in various cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Denpasar.
He was awarded the Arts Award by the Government of Yogyakarta, Adam Malik Award in 1996, and The Hamengkubuwono IX Award in 2002.
He is the founder of The Rusli Museum in Yogyakarta.
